South-Western Germany (Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg) is the warmest and most sun-drenched region in the country. The Rhine Rift Valley ranks among the most climatically favoured areas north of the Alps — comparable to northern Burgundy in France. July temperatures of 23–26 °C, more than 1,800 sunshine hours per year, and a long, mild autumn create near-ideal conditions for outdoor cultivation. Strains with long flowering windows that would be risky elsewhere in Germany can be grown here without concern. The Saarland and the Upper Rhine plain are particularly blessed. Frost risk is low until late October, favouring late-flowering varieties.
Grow-Tipps
It is worth trialling strains with 10–12 week flowering times outdoors here. Irrigation in midsummer is essential — the dry Rhine rift regularly suffers water stress in July and August. Terrace and balcony growing is especially rewarding in the south-west thanks to the long sunshine hours.
