How to Convert EC and PPM – Dose Nutrients Correctly

EC (Electrical Conductivity) and PPM (Parts Per Million) are the two most important measurements for nutrient concentration in cannabis cultivation. Our free EC/PPM calculator helps you quickly and reliably convert between both units – whether you use the Hanna (×500) or Eutech scale (×700).

The right nutrient concentration is crucial for healthy plant growth. EC values that are too low lead to deficiency symptoms, while values that are too high burn the roots and inhibit growth. With our tool, you can instantly see whether your EC value matches the current growth stage.

Note: There are two common PPM scales. The Hanna scale (factor 500) is common in the US, while the Eutech/Truncheon scale (factor 700) is used in Europe and Australia. An EC of 1.0 equals 500 PPM (Hanna) or 700 PPM (Eutech). Check which scale your meter uses.

For clones and seedlings, we recommend starting with low EC values of 0.2–0.6, gradually increasing over time. During flowering, experienced growers can go up to 2.2 EC. Regularly check the EC of your nutrient solution and runoff water to avoid salt buildup in the substrate.

Frequently Asked Questions About the EC/PPM Calculator

EC measures the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution in mS/cm and is a universal standard. PPM estimates the concentration of dissolved substances but depends on the scale used (×500 or ×700). EC is more accurate and preferred by professionals.
It depends on your meter. Hanna devices use the ×500 scale, Truncheon/Bluelab devices use ×700. Check your meter's manual or switch to EC mode if available.
Fresh clones and seedlings tolerate EC values of 0.2 to 0.6. Start low and increase slowly once the plant shows strong new root growth.
At least with every watering or nutrient solution change. In hydroponic systems, daily is best. Also measure runoff water – if EC rises sharply there, overfeeding is likely.
Flush the substrate with pH-adjusted water and mix a weaker nutrient solution afterwards. In hydro: do a partial water change with fresh water.
Yes, warmer water has higher conductivity. Most quality EC meters compensate automatically (ATC). Ideally, measure at around 25°C.
