pH Value in Cannabis Growing – Why It Matters So Much

The pH of your watering solution is one of the most important factors in cannabis cultivation. It determines which nutrients your plant can absorb and which remain 'locked out' in the substrate. Our free pH diagnostic tool instantly shows you whether your pH is in the optimal range – tailored to your substrate.

Different substrates require different pH ranges: soil prefers a slightly acidic pH of 6.0–7.0, while coco and hydroponics need a range of 5.5–6.5. Outside these ranges, nutrients like iron, calcium, or phosphorus cannot be absorbed – even if they're present in the nutrient solution.

The most common cause of deficiency symptoms in home growing isn't missing fertilizer, but incorrect pH. Yellow leaves, brown spots, or stunted flowers are often signs of pH-related nutrient lockout. Regular pH checks before each watering reliably prevent these problems.

We recommend using a digital pH meter that you calibrate regularly. For correction, pH Up (potassium hydroxide-based) and pH Down (phosphoric acid) are available. Always adjust the value slowly and measure again after 15 minutes. This prevents pH fluctuations that can stress your plants.

Frequently Asked Questions About pH in Cannabis Growing

The ideal pH for cannabis in soil is between 6.0 and 7.0, with an optimal value of 6.5. In this range, all essential nutrients are available to the plant.
For coco substrate and hydroponic systems, the optimal pH range is 5.5 to 6.5. The ideal value is around 5.8. These substrates have less pH buffering than soil.
With an incorrect pH, certain nutrients cannot be absorbed (nutrient lockout). Typical symptoms include yellow leaves, brown spots, slow growth, and reduced yield – even though enough fertilizer is present.
Use pH Down based on phosphoric acid or citric acid. Add drop by drop, stir, and measure again after 15 minutes. Always lower the value in small steps (0.2 pH).
Use pH Up based on potassium hydroxide. For soil, dolomite lime can also be mixed in, which stabilizes pH long-term while providing calcium and magnesium.
Measure pH with every watering – both the nutrient solution and the runoff water. In hydroponic systems, we recommend daily monitoring as pH can fluctuate more.
