Water when the top 2–3 cm of substrate feels dry. Lift the pot to gauge weight – a light pot means it's time to water. Always water until you see 10–20% runoff to prevent salt buildup.

How to Water Cannabis Plants Correctly

Overwatering is the number one mistake made by beginner growers. Cannabis plants prefer a wet-dry cycle where the substrate partially dries out between waterings. This cycle encourages root growth and prevents root rot.

The ideal watering frequency depends on several factors: pot size, substrate type, plant size, temperature, and humidity. Smaller pots dry out faster, coco dries faster than soil, and higher temperatures increase evaporation.

A good rule of thumb is to water with 20–30% of the pot's volume. For an 11-liter pot in soil, that means about 2.5–3 liters per watering. In coco, increase to 30% to ensure adequate runoff for preventing salt buildup.

Monitor the dry-back percentage – how much moisture the substrate loses between waterings. Soil should dry back 50–60% before the next watering, while coco only needs 30–40% dry-back. Under-watering causes nutrient lockout; over-watering causes root rot.

Frequently Asked Questions About Watering Cannabis

Lift the pot – if it feels light, it's time to water. You can also check the top 2–3 cm of substrate with your finger. If it's dry, water thoroughly until you see runoff.
Water with approximately 20–30% of your pot's volume. For an 11L pot, that's 2.2–3.3 liters. Always water until you see 10–20% runoff to flush out accumulated salts.
Dry-back is the percentage of moisture lost between waterings. Proper dry-back encourages root growth and oxygen uptake. Soil should dry back 50–60%, coco 30–40%.
Water at the beginning of the light cycle (morning). Plants transpire more during the day, and watering before lights-on ensures moisture is available when the plant is most active.
Yes. Flowering plants are larger and transpire more, so they need more frequent watering. However, in the last 1–2 weeks before harvest, some growers reduce watering to stress the plant slightly.
Usually yes, but let it sit for 24 hours to off-gas chlorine. Check the pH (target 6.0–6.5 for soil, 5.5–6.0 for coco/hydro) and EC (ideally below 0.4 mS/cm). Hard water may require filtering.
