Introduction to Cannabis Growth Stages
Cannabis cultivation is an art that requires patience, knowledge, and care. Each phase of the growth process presents its own challenges and requirements. From germination to harvest, it is crucial to understand the plant’s needs precisely to achieve optimal results.
In this guide, we highlight the key growth stages of cannabis and offer valuable tips from years of experience to help you get the most out of your harvest.
Germination: The Starting Point for Growth
Germination is the first and one of the most critical phases in the life of a cannabis plant. In our experience, the best method for germinating seeds is using moist paper towels. Place the seeds between two moistened towels and store them in a warm, dark place. The ideal temperature is between 20-25Β°C to promote germination within 1-7 days.
A common mistake we see is overwatering the seedlings, which can quickly lead to mold or rot. Keep the towels merely moist, not wet.
Vegetative Phase: Promoting Growth
In the vegetative phase, the plant focuses on root and leaf growth. Good lighting is crucial in this phase. We recommend a lighting duration of 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness to promote vigorous growth.
The pH value of the water should be between 6.0 and 6.5 to optimize nutrient uptake. You can learn more about growing cannabis in soil to create the best conditions for growth.
Nutrient Supply in the Vegetative Phase
A balanced nutrient supply is crucial. Nitrogen is particularly important in this phase as it promotes leaf growth. Combine this with potassium and phosphorus for healthy development.
Flowering Phase: Bud Formation and Harvest Preparation
The flowering phase is the most exciting time for any grower. Here, the plant begins to develop buds that will eventually be harvested. In nature, flowering is triggered by the shortening of daylight hours. Indoors, set the lighting to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
We have found that lowering the pH to about 6.0 during flowering improves the uptake of phosphorus and potassium, which are crucial for bud formation.
Avoiding Problems in the Flowering Phase
A common problem in the flowering phase is the occurrence of mold. Ensure good ventilation and keep humidity below 50% to minimize this risk. More on this can be found in our article on the right timing and instructions for pruning.
Harvest and Post-Processing
The right harvest time is crucial for the quality of the final product. Observe the trichomes, which change from clear to milky and finally amber. We recommend harvesting when most trichomes are milky and about 10-20% are amber.
After harvesting, the buds should be gently dried and cured to improve flavor and potency. Store the dried buds in a dark, cool room at about 60% humidity.
