Successfully rooting cannabis clones
Rooting clones is one of the cheapest and fastest ways to propagate identical cannabis plants. On average, clones take 7 to 14 days to form visible roots — the exact duration depends on method, climate, hormone and plant material.
The two most important factors are humidity and temperature. Freshly cut clones can't take up water through roots yet, only through their leaves. 85–95% humidity and 22–25°C are mandatory — otherwise clones dry out before they can root.
Rockwool and aero cloners have the highest success rates because they keep the climate constant in the root zone. Water glass works but tends to produce weaker roots that suffer when transplanted. Direct soil is the slowest method and most prone to mold.
Rooting hormone is optional but significantly raises success rate and speed. Gel sticks best to the stem, powder is cheaper. If you have no time or want certainty, buy pre-rooted clones — that skips the first 14 days entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions about Clone Rooting
Most clones develop visible roots between day 7 and day 14.
Aero cloners can root as early as day 5, soil clones often need 10–16 days.
If no roots are visible after 21 days, the cutting has failed.
Rockwool has the highest success rate for beginners (around 85%) because it holds water and air optimally.
Jiffys are cheap and easy.
Water glass is free, but the roots are softer and tend to shock when transplanted.
No, but it's worth it.
Without hormone, success rates are about 15% lower and rooting takes longer.
Gel adheres better than powder and additionally seals the cut against fungal infection.
Slight drooping in the first 24–48 hours is normal — the clones are rebalancing their water uptake.
If they still droop heavily after 3 days, humidity is usually too low or the leaves are too large (trim them by half).
As soon as the roots are 2–3 cm long and clearly pierce the cube or jiffy.
Transplanting too early shocks the plant, transplanting too late causes root ball matting.
